When Infertility Enters the Relationship: Attachment, Grief, and Connection Through the Fertility Journey

Deliesha Durden, LCMHC, PMH-C

About This Webinar

This presentation explores infertility as more than a medical experience by examining its emotional, relational, and attachment-based impact on individuals and couples. Participants will learn how infertility can affect communication, grief, identity, intimacy, emotional safety, and the couple bond, including the ways partners may cope or grieve differently.

Using an attachment-informed and relationship-centered lens, the session will address common myths about infertility, the layered impact of pregnancy loss, and how attachment distress can show up as conflict, withdrawal, or disconnection. Participants will explore practical strategies for supporting couples through fertility treatment and uncertainty, including how providers may unintentionally contribute to relational harm through exclusion, blame, minimizing grief, or toxic positivity. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to support both partners, protect the relationship during treatment, and provide more compassionate, culturally responsive infertility care.
